Brittle fracture of dental amalgam.

چکیده
The brittleness of dental amalgam limits its use to sites in which tensile stresses can be kept at a minimum. If the cause for the brittleness could be ascertained, then an approach to correct this problem could be devised. Physical properties of metals are ultimately manifested in, and can be explained by, their microstructure. Through the work of several researchers,1-3 means of identifying the phases present in the microstructure have been developed. In this study, the etching solutions developed by Schmitt1 and Wing2 were employed. The phases present in amalgam, as shown by these chemical etches, are identified as 'y, yri, and 72. The

Effect of three different core materials on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated deciduous mandibular second molars: an in vitro study.
Endodontic treatment makes the tooth brittle due to loss of bulk of tooth structure, decrease in the moisture content of dentin and dentin elasticity. The following study was carried out to evaluate the effect of endodontic treatment on the fracture resistance of the tooth and reinforcing ability of three different core materials. The following study comprised of sample size of 30 deciduous sec...
متن کاملLongevity of Amalgam Build-Up Restorations in Endodontically Treated Teeth
Background and Aim: Restoration of endodontically treated teeth is one of the most important and challenging topics in restorative dentistry. Longevity of such restorations is an essential factor in treatment planning. Amalgam build-up is a conservative method for restoration of endodontically treated teeth. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the longevity of this type of restoration in endo...
متن کاملClinical Evaluation of Reasons for Replacement of Amalgam Restorations in Patients Referring to a Dental School in Iran
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The present study evaluated the most common reasons for replacing amalgam restorations in a university clinic. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 217 restorations which needed to be replaced were clinically and radiographically evaluated in a period of 4 months. The frequencies of reasons for replacing amalgam restorations were calculated: The assessed items included recurre...
متن کاملThe comparative evaluation of fracture resistance and microleakage in bonded amalgam, amalgam, and composite resins in primary molars.
BACKGROUND The intense development of adhesive restorative materials and parents' preferences for esthetic restorations prompt clinicians to use alternative restorative materials for primary molars. Amalgam, however, is the choice of material when it comes to occlusal stress bearing areas, either in primary or permanent molars. To overcome the drawbacks of amalgam and restorative adhesive mater...
متن کاملEffect of composite/amalgam thickness on fracture resistance of maxillary premolar teeth, restored with combined amalgam-composite restorations
BACKGROUND Combined amalgam-composite restorations have been used through many years to benefit from the advantages of both dental amalgam and composite resin. Two variations have been mentioned for this technique, this study investigated the fracture resistance of maxillary premolar teeth with extended mesio-occluso-distal (MOD) cavities, restored with the two variations of combined amalgam-co...
